Southport Timbers was established in 1876 when R.T Johnston purchased land and erected steam powered sawmill and joinery works. Logs were cut along the banks of the Nerang River, rafted downstream to near "todays" Broadbeach and hauled by Bullock team to the mill. Johnston and Freeman's mill was floated as Southport Timbers in 1909 and rebuilt after a fire in 1915. By the 1950's the enterprise employed up to 50 men in the mill and in the field. It was the longest survivor of a series of mills dating from the 1880's. In 1972 Southport Timbers moved from Nind Street, Southport to it's current location at Industrial Avenue Molendinar. The company is now owned and operated by J.H Williams Pty Ltd. (historical excerpt from "Geographical Overview of Sawmilling" John Kerr Jan1998)
Southport Timbers' focus was as a green hardwood sawmill and merchant outlet until the early 1980's, around the time Radiata Pine began to increase in popularity. Southport Timbers switched over to pine framing and eventually into the manufacture of pine Roof Trusses.
Since 1990 the business has experienced enormous growth, particularly in Roof and Floor Truss manufacture. Expansion saw the installation of Roof & Floor Truss plants, a move that has been more than successful for Southport Timbers. Recently the Roof Truss plant has had major upgrades to increase production.
In 2005 Southport Timbers built an Aluminium Window Joinery on the site. Now Southport Windows, produce a wide range of high quality windows for domestic and commercial applications.
Southport Timbers is a founding member of the Gold Coast Timber Merchants Association. This gives us a chance to meet other merchants and to discuss issues that affect us all. Southport Timbers is also a member of QCCI, BICB, TIMBER QUEENSLAND & AWA (Australian Window Association).
Southport Timbers is an equal opportunity employer and also encourages all staff to put forward ideas that may help to improve the company.
